I saw these in the now shuttered Posman Books housed in Grand Central Terminal. What were they thinking?
While perusing their website, I saw products that were meant to bring “fun and pleasure” to people’s lives, but could find no other products that tokenize and stereotype other ethnicities e.g. blackface or Sambo so I wonder what their rationale was for manufacturing the Asian Fashion Fan product. I sent them a letter asking them why they thought this was a good business move, but got no reply.
Perhaps they thought it culturally acceptable to single out Asians vs. African-Americans, or another ethnic group based on what they thought they could get away with. This company has no problem with creating products that will perpetuate negative and demeaning attitudes towards my race.
